Luxury water villas over a turquoise lagoon in the Maldives

Indian Ocean & South Pacific Luxury Hotels

Overwater villas, private islands and lagoons so clear the boats seem to float on air.

This is the world’s honeymoon belt: the Maldives’ one-island-one-resort atolls, the granite-strewn beaches of the Seychelles, Bora Bora’s lagoon beneath Mount Otemanu. Distances are long and transfers are part of the experience, so planning the journey matters as much as choosing the villa.

Planning an Indian Ocean or South Pacific Stay

Long flights

From North America these are one- or two-stop journeys. Break the trip with a night in a hub such as Dubai, Doha, Singapore or Los Angeles.

Transfers

Seaplanes, speedboats and inter-island flights add cost and time. Check them before you compare resort rates.

Meal plans

On a private-island resort every meal is taken on property, so half-board, full-board or all-inclusive plans are often worth it.

Two-resort trips

Many travelers pair a lively resort with a remote one, or add Dubai, Bali’s Ubud or Tahiti to the beach stay.

Indian Ocean & Pacific FAQ

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The dry northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings the calmest seas and most sunshine. May to November is wetter and windier but often much better value, and it is a good time for manta rays in some atolls.

How do you get to a Maldives resort?

Via Malé (MLE), then by speedboat for resorts in the nearby atolls, or by seaplane or domestic flight plus boat for more distant ones. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, which can mean a night in transit.

Overwater villa or beach villa?

Overwater villas give you direct lagoon access and the iconic view. Beach villas offer more privacy, shade and space for families. Many couples split a stay between the two.
