Positano’s colorful hillside hotels above the sea on the Amalfi Coast

Luxury Seaside Hotels on the Mediterranean

Cliffside terraces, legendary Riviera hotels and whitewashed suites above the Aegean.

Mediterranean luxury is about setting and history: grand hotels where the Riviera’s golden age played out, family-run palazzos clinging to the Amalfi cliffs, and island suites carved into volcanic rock. The sea is often reached by stairs, an elevator through the cliff or a hotel boat, which is part of the charm.

The Riviera by the season

Spring brings the Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival, which fill hotels and raise prices. Book well ahead for May.

Greek islands

Santorini is about sunsets and views; for beaches, choose the island’s south coast or neighboring islands.

The Monaco coastline, yachts and mountains on the French Riviera

Also consider Nice, Mallorca, Sicily and Crete. For European trip planning, see Plan It Europe, or sail between these coasts on a small luxury ship with Seaside Luxury Cruises.

Planning a Mediterranean Luxury Stay

Getting there

Naples for the Amalfi Coast and Capri, Nice for the Riviera and Monaco, Athens or direct seasonal flights for the Greek islands, Faro for the Algarve.

Minimum stays

Many seasonal hotels require three- to seven-night stays in July and August.

Combine coasts

Pair two regions — for example Rome with the Amalfi Coast, or Paris with the Riviera — using fast trains and short flights.

Arrive by sea

Private boat transfers to Capri, Positano and the Greek islands are part of the experience; ask your specialist to arrange them.

Mediterranean FAQ

When is the Mediterranean beach season?

Roughly June to September for warm seas, with July and August the busiest and most expensive. Late May, June and September offer a better balance. Many seasonal hotels on the Amalfi Coast and Greek islands close from about November to March or April.

Are Mediterranean beaches sandy?

Often not. Many of the most famous spots, including the Amalfi Coast, Capri and parts of the Riviera, have pebble beaches, rocky platforms and beach clubs. Hotels there make up for it with pools, sea-level lidos and boats.
